2010 Crossfit Games

So the 2010 games just ended and I gotta be honest, I hated watching it. I was disappointed in the last several minutes of competition. Very anti-climactic. Did Speal win? Did Rich pull it out, Did Kahlipa somhow come from nowhere and take it from under their noses? Wait and we'll let you know (insert jeopardy theme music here)(insert any crappy MUZAK elevator music here). Dammit, just give us a winner. Felt like waiting for the end of a fight and them going to the judges scorecard... boring... you lost me. I like to know right when its over what the outcome is. Not all this wait around and tally up points bull. My ADD kicks in about 10 minutes into anything like that and I start pacing. To be honest, i much more enjoyed the female comp than then men's. Kristen Clever put on a hell of a performance and kicked ass on the last three wods to win it all. Congrats.

The competition itself is very hard to watch without wanting to do it. All of the movements that were in it this year I have! Ring HSPU check, 135lb squat snatch-check, rope climbs- check. arrrrrrrg! I can't really place my finger on it, but I just feel blah about the whole comp this year. oh well. 364 more days until we do it again.

Just want to get something off my mind

I heard this guy Martin Rooney speak this weekend and he made me think. Well first, the title of his talk was, "The art of exceptional training". Wonderful speaker- high energy, very excited, funny- kind of like me. A take-away point he made with me was that our (my) education gets in the way of our learning. I think I know it all (from and exercise standpoint anyway). I don't really think that, but the point is I have roughly 6 years of college, 2 degrees in the exercise field, several well sought after certifications (all this knowledge) and that tends to close (or use to close) me off to new ideas. What Mr. Rooney asked, and what I ask is for you to open your mind, and empty it of what you think you know. Allow yourself to absorb new ideas and this absorption might even further solidify where you stand know, but don't shoot something down just because your 11th grade track coach had you do it, so that must be right. Or don't tell me that you are a doctor and you know better, when in all your medical school (8+ years) you spent about 15 minutes learning about diet and exercise. Some of my ideas might be controversial or even silly, but YOU SHOULDN'T MAKE THAT JUDGEMENT UNTIL YOU TRY IT FOR YOURSELF. Try it (something new that makes you feel uncomfortable inside) and if it makes you better, hell keep doing it, and on the flip-side if you still don't like it... no harm no foul. So Read further only if your cup is empty.

Welcome to the world of me

I just got back from the NSCA conference down in Orlando, and am really fired up to start putting some of my ideas down both for my own satisfaction, and maybe other folk's enjoyment as well. First let me start by saying that I don't write well. Grammar, spelling, syntax, run-ons, phrase use, ending sentences in prepositions, and starting sentences with "because" are all things to which I am guilty. Sorry. There I got it out of the way. I like to write in a "stream of consciousness" type format with random thoughts jumping from here to there. I realize that I have soooo much crap in my head that I need to empty it somewhere. Ideas on life, fitness, raising my kid... ohh which brings me to a good starting point.

My name is Drew McKenzie. I am married to a wonderful girl, Jennifer (Jenni), and we have an awesome son, Jackson (j, j-man,), and a very frisky dog named Obi (yep you guessed it a Star Wars dork here). We own a business here in town called "Crossfit Hyperformance". Love training athletes and watching others succeed, but I feel like I wanna do more. Hopefully this blog will let me kind of let loose a but from some of the things I hold on to everyday. If you read this blog and get easily offended, then STOP RIGHT NOW. It only get worse from here. I do however love to engage in constructive and healthy debate. If you feel the need to get snippy, then I have a sailor's vocabulary just for that purpose. I would rather solve the worlds problems than argue, but hey... when in Rome. If you read this and keep reading and you like my ideas, then thank you. If you disagree with me and think I am an idiot and offer up different trains of thought, then I thank you more.

Yours in the Pursuit (I forget where I this ending from, but I really like it.)
